The Opportunity

Slegg Building Materials is currently seeking a Full Time Financial Controller to work out of our Corporate Head Office in Sidney.

Key Account Responsibilities and Functions

(Include but are not limited to the following)


  • Management and ownership of the division’s accounting function
  • Act as an ambassador of the company with all stakeholders
  • Maintain an emphasis on a safety culture, customer service, and efficiency as top priorities
  • Communicate issues and successes to appropriate superior(s) in a respectful and timely manner 
  • Follow all regulations and company policies and procedures


  • Bank reconciliations
  • Payroll process review
  • Complete Trial Balance ownership and reconciliation
  • Liaise/supervise with Accounts Payable and Receivable as necessary
  • Regulatory body reporting with regard to consumption taxes, WCB, etc.
  • Timely and accurate production of month-end and year-end entries, analysis, and reconciliation
  • Review and approval of expense reports
  • As requested, evaluate existing internal controls, processes, and financial reporting methodologies and determine any required corrective action
  • Provide technical accounting guidance and support to ensure compliance of internal accounting policies and procedures in accordance to business requirements, industry standards, and federal regulations
  • Participate in special projects such as financial systems upgrades, evaluation of new systems, or procedures
  • Active management, mentoring, or guidance to any assigned direct or indirect reports or teams on regular tasks or special projects
  • Various other ad hoc projects and analytics to support senior management

Job Requirements

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or other related discipline
  • CPA designation required
  • Minimum 3 years of experience (experience in a related industry is an asset)
  • Demonstrated experience with general ledgers and financial reporting
  • Experience with Microsoft Navision and Jet Reports would be an asset
  • Advanced User in Microsoft Excel (formulas, pivot tables, V-lookup, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of payroll practices, reports, and software
  • Strong attention to detail and passion for accuracy
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving ability
  • Excellent interpersonal and written / verbal communication skills
  • Self-directed and organized with effective time management skills
  • Proven skills managing and mentoring a core accounting team
  • Flexibility and ability to extend standard business hours as required to meet routine and unexpected deadlines
